How do I care for my dog bed?
Caring for your dog bed does not have to be complicated. If you keep a few simple rules in mind, your dog’s bed will always be clean, fresh and nice!
1. Laundering your dog’s bed
Washing your dog’s bed is essential to keep it clean and fragrant. Please note the following rules.
If your dog bed has a removable cover, wash it regularly with mild detergents, preferably those designed for babies. Such detergents will not harm your dog but will thoroughly clean the material.
Wash your dog bed using the programme for delicate fabrics with minimal spin. This will help the fabric retain its vibrant colours for longer.
If your dog bed is very dirty, you can spot clean it with a stain remover. However, for the sake of your dog’s well-being, we recommend homemade methods for removing stains, such as using baking soda.
The upholstery fabric cover can be safely tumble-dried so that your pet can quickly lie down in a clean bed.
2. Airing your dog bed regularly
You should also air your dog bed frequently. This simple measure will help to remove unpleasant smells from your dog bed. Air your dog bed on a balcony or terrace during dry and windy weather. You can also air the bed during frosty spells, when the icy wind acts as a natural disinfectant, removing mites among other things.
3. Quickly freshening up your dog bed
On the market, you will find natural odour fresheners based on plant ingredients. These products can be used to quickly freshen up your dog’s bed if there is an unpleasant odour. You can also prepare a pet-safe refresher at home. All you need is an atomiser bottle, clean water and a dash of essential oil of your choice (check beforehand whether the oil you have chosen is safe for pets).
4. A blanket for your dog bed – just in case
If your dog’s bed needs to be cleaned less frequently, you should always provide it with a blanket to protect it from dirt. If your dog puts sand or soil in his bed, simply shake it off and wash the blanket – it will keep the bed clean. In addition, the warm and soft blanket can be used to cover your pet during a tasty nap!
If you own a puppy and want to prevent your puppy from peeing, place a special training mat between the cushion and the blanket. The hygienic mat is highly absorbent, so it will prevent your puppy from wetting the bed. A similar procedure should be used for older and sick dogs with incontinence problems.
